What is on my food

Happy Thursday All!

Another cold day, so hot cup of tea is on my desk. My favourite is lemon (peeled off) tea with ginger and honey. Some time ago I have spoken to my friend, who lives in Spain. He has sent me a picture of lemons harvested in his local area and exported to many countries. A label has caught my attention and one of the products used to preserve the fruits: IMAZALIL. Imazalil is often applied on fruit such as citrus, and it is also applied on cucumbers, roses, barley, and wheat. Imazalil is classified as a moderately toxic compound and carries the signal word WARNING on the label. It is supplied in a variety of formulations for use as a foliar spray or seed treatment. Imazalil has got a various trade names and identifiers. It is the most frequently detected pesticide.

Toxicity

Imazalil is moderately hazardous and a likely human carcinogen, according to WHO. Most of the pesticide might be in the peel and therefore not eaten. Exposure to imazalil can have negative effects on the respiratory system. Sensitive individuals exposed to imazalil have shown symptoms of contact dermatitis.

How to remove pesticide off from your products?

There is no 100% successful products to wash off the pesticides from your fruits and veggies. Buy organic if you can, especially when you have children. Chemicals stick to the fingers and they can be contaminated. You can also wash your fruits in water mixed with baking soda, but it only removes up to 76% of pesticides.

We know what we should be feeding our bodies, but sometimes our suppliers forget just to make money!
