Air Fresheners Toxic Scent

Happy Friday lovely people!

Weekend just started. I have just finished my housework. All windows are open to clean the air in the house. Some of you might like the smell of the cleaning products and air fresheners, but I don’t! In this post I will explain, why?

We are bombarded by air fresheners every day – in the workplace, public restrooms, schools, and even cars. On store shelves you’ll find them in numerous forms: electric, automatic misting sprays, gels, beads, plug-ins, heated oils, sprays and more. I even saw clothes and bed sheets fresheners as well! I am just wondering how many people know what they contain? We should know what we inhale. πŸ™‚

Companies are legally allowed to keep fragrance ingredients confidential due to Trade Secret status, but I have done some researches what they contain and you will be shocked! Below is a list of the most common chemicals used to produce air fresheners and associated harm effects to your body:

  • 1,4-Diclorobenzene. It might impair lung function,
  • Acetaldehyde. It is carcinogen substance.
  • Benzene. It is carcinogen substance.
  • d-Limonene. It is associated with skin and eye irritation.
  • Formaldehyde. It is carcinogen.
  • Parabens. It is linked with breast cancer and effects associated with hormone disruption.
  • Phthalates. Associated with effects from endocrine disruption.
  • Styrene. It is carcinogen.
  • Xylene. It is linked to headache, dizziness.

Beware of Greenwashing! Claims like ‘all natural’, ‘green’, are used just for marketing purposes!

If you really want to have clean and nice smell in your home you can get it without toxic air fresheners. Here are some tips for fresher and safer indoor air:

  • Clean your house on regular basis.
  • Use mask and gloves when using cleaning products.
  • Change your bed sheets once a week.
  • Keep garbage containers clean.
  • Try to keep your windows open.
  • Use baking soda as odour absorbent.
  • Keep your kitchen ventilator on when cooking.
  • Keep green plants in your rooms. Spider plant, snake plant, peace lily are great natural air filters.
  • Make natural scented candles. I use bee wax and coffee bins.
  • Use natural aromatic herbs. I make lavender in cotton bags and hang them in the wardrobes.

Thank you for reading and enjoy your weekend! πŸ™‚
